Did you just start traveling by yourself? It can be a daunting experience to be on the road and not know anyone. However, there are some amazing benefits that come with traveling by yourself. Regardless, there are some effective methods to gain new friends and build friendships even if you are from another culture.
You Are Exotic
Remember, you are exotic and people will be interested in knowing more about you. You just have to be open and accepting of the differences you might have with some people. Don’t be judgmental and come from a place that signals who is right and who is wrong when it comes to certain outlook on life. Each and every culture is different and have their take on things.
However, being a foreigner, you have the advantage of not necessarily being held to the same level of standard that locals are held to. You don’t necessarily have to be confined by the standards of the particular culture you are in.
Whether you are from a hot country with amazing beaches, or from a cold northern country that requires you to stay warm, you are someone special.
It allows you the great freedom to learn more yourself and opening up. You better use those moments to discover the world and yourself.
In the age of digital media, it is easy to get connected with people from all over the world. It does help to search for people who are from a similar background to you, but I invite you guys to reach out to locals from the area.
Use websites and applications such as Facebook, Couchsurfing, and Meetup to get acquainted with people around the area. If you live in a decently populated city, you should not have much trouble getting involved with interest groups and something that you would like to do.
Taking courses & classes
If you have some money to spare, why not take courses and classes on AirBNB or other websites. Yes, you are spending money, but you are also enjoying yourself, learning new things, and it gives you the perfect opportunity to meet people who are doing the same thing.
Some locals go out of their way to meet with foreigners in order to improve their language or to just learn more about the world.
Opening yourself up
This depends on your comfort level and how socially attuned you are. Some people just have the ability to make friends easily. It does help to be an extrovert, but introverts can also do this.
Being aware of your surroundings and open minded can go a long way. If there is an event that is advertised, why not try going? If there is a girl or guy smiling your direction, why not try saying hi and introducing yourself?
It does require some getting used to, but it all depends on what you make of your environment and how well you can make the best out of the situation. So go out there and enjoy the world. People like being around positive people, so be someone who others would like to be around and gregarious.
